Programme achievements 2020

All people with disabilities and mental health conditions are engaged, empowered and able to enjoy improved wellbeing, social and economic outcomes and rights.

In the first year of operation, programme start up took place during an exceptional global coronavirus pandemic, which led to challenges in implementing planned activities. Towards the end of the year, national elections further delayed some programme activities.  Despite these challenges, the programme has made significant progress in 2020. Stakeholder engagement was key, and activities were reprioritised to focus on the impact of COVID-19. This included the rapid assessment of the impact of COVID-19 on people with disabilities, including people with mental health disabilities, which informed the programme’s COVID-19 interventions.

The programme is gradually making good progress towards its overall goal that:

All people with disabilities and mental health conditions are engaged, empowered and able to enjoy improved wellbeing, social and economic outcomes and rights.

Overall, within the 4 key areas of our programme, we had 18 key strands of work planned for 2020. Out of these, 15 were successfully delivered. This represents an 83% achievement rate. The remaining three strands were well advanced at the end of 2020.

Key achievements made by the programme during 2020 included:

  • Provided grants and capacity building support to 7 CSOs to ensure that people most affected by COVID-19 receive psychosocial support

  • Supported 171 self-help groups to re-open and operate safely during the pandemic

  • Supported MHA with the development of the Mental Health Review Tribunal

  • Celebrated World Mental Health Day activities across Ghana, calling for increased investment in mental health

  • Supported the NCPD’s Disability Summit on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

  • Conducted a joint assessment with the MHA on the supply of psychotropic medicines.
